PS Plus: this free Xbox game still impresses players, don’t miss it

Sometimes a title offered via PlayStation Plus goes unnoticed when it is made available. This is exactly what appears to have happened to Psychonauts 2, developed by Double Fine. Distributed in September 2025 among the monthly games, the game never entered the Extra or Premium catalogs thereafter. In other words: those who did not add it to their library at the time no longer have access to it today. But those who had recovered it… rediscovered a real nugget.

“I’m blown away”

On Reddit, several PS Plus subscribers shared their surprise after launching the game months later. Some speak of a “hidden nugget”, others of an “exceptional game”. A player explains that he did not expect such visual quality, even on PS4.

This renewed interest is not entirely surprising. When it was released in 2021, Psychonauts 2 received Metacritic scores between 87 and 91 depending on the platform. It also received five Game Awards nominations, including Game of the Year. Despite this, its sales remained relatively modest.

Why does the game make such an impact?

  • An inventive artistic direction
  • Levels built around original mental worlds
  • An omnipresent humor
  • Smooth platforming gameplay

Its average lifespan ranges between 15 and 20 hours for the main story. Complete players can easily exceed 25 hours. For a title offered in a monthly subscription, the proposition remains particularly solid.

An important reminder for subscribers

However, one essential point should be made clear: even if you added Psychonauts 2 to your library in September 2025, an active PS Plus subscription is still required to play it. This is the standard operation of monthly games offered via the service. At the same time, the service continues to regularly add major titles, including some RPGs exceeding 100 hours of content.

A late rediscovery… but deserved

Psychonauts 2 perfectly illustrates the phenomenon of “underrated” games that find a second life thanks to subscriptions. For subscribers who downloaded it without touching it, this may be the perfect time to give it a chance. And for those who missed it: the lesson is simple — always add monthly games to your library, even if you don’t plan to play them right away.
