PlayStation 6 planned for 2029 according to several sources, a risky bet for Sony in the face of the cloud and the PC

Sony’s next console still has no official design or known technical sheet. However, according to several sources discussing the progress of the project, the PlayStation 6 could see the light of day in 2029, nine years after the release of the PS5. A strategic choice that is not unanimous. The wait of almost a decade could indeed place Sony in a delicate position in the face of future technological developments.

Many users, especially on Redditquestion the relevance of this calendar. The risk? That at the time of its launch, the PS6 was already behind the PC or cloud gaming standards of the time.

Potentially obsolete components at launch

One of the main criticisms made concerns the technology embedded in future consoles. If Sony opts again for an architecture AMD RDNA in 2029, as on the PS5, some players believe that it will be an outdated choice. The current inflation of the semiconductor market and the rise ofGenerative AI make projection difficult.

A user sums up the general state of mind as follows: “Those who are worried about 2027 are getting carried away. Certainly, the rise of AI has caused a real explosion in component prices, but the show must go on” before adding ironically: “You don’t want a PS6 in 2027?… Don’t buy one.”

Ray tracing still at the heart of the debate

Another point of tension: the ray tracinglight rendering technology expected to revolutionize video games. Even today, few titles really take advantage of it without compromising on performance. Some believe that relying too early on this technique could penalize the PS6, especially if it does not integrate the latest generations of GPUs.

As one gamer explains: “Ray tracing is the future of lighting, but it was implemented in games way too early. If I have to pay $1,000 for a graphics card to get high-fidelity rendering at nearly 60 frames per second, this feature is simply not ready for the market.”

A PS5 not yet exploited to its full potential

Finally, several voices recall that the PS5 itself experienced a chaotic launch, marked by global shortages. For many, its full exploitation is only just beginning, and considering a new generation in 2029 seems premature.

One comment sums up this caution well: “Honestly, I think that seven years for the PS5 is too short to fully exploit the hardware and offer enough content for the power to be there. The technology has not evolved enough to justify a generation change instead of a simple update of the specifications”

In a context where high-end graphics cards cost around €1,500, the console remains an attractive solution today. And at this stage, there is no hurry: the PS5 still has many years ahead of it.
