Nintendo Switch 2 is rolling out a major update with new features, here’s what’s changing

No new console, but almost. As of November 10, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 users can download firmware update 21.0.0. If the official notes remain technical, several changes visible on a daily basis are worth the detour, whether to better manage your games, chat with friends or even boost accessibility.

Among the most immediate changes: new symbols now appear above game icons to indicate if it is a physical or digital version. Another practical improvement is that it is possible to download data from a virtual game card even when the “Use online license” option is disabled. An option that simplifies the management of pre-installed content, such as Mario Kart Worldoffered in certain editions.

GameChat and connectivity: the Switch 2 is closer to a home console

One of the major developments concerns the system of GameChat voice chatspecific to the Switch 2. The console no longer automatically goes to sleep during a discussion, and switching from a wired connection (docked mode) to a wireless connection (portable mode) no longer cuts off the conversation. In short, voice chat becomes fluid and continuousregardless of the configuration.

Another expected new feature: it is now possible to search for players you meet in your friends’ voice roomsa valuable function for expanding your network effortlessly.

Audio, HDR and eShop settings: details that matter

In the system settings, the power saving mode has been renamed more clearly: “Stop charging around 80-90%”. This simple clarification should reassure users worried about never reaching 90%.

The dataminer OatmealDome also highlighted a hidden HDR function : a new menu would allow you to adjust the maximum brightness of the screen in TV mode. Nintendo hasn’t mentioned it officially, but users on ResetEra confirmed its existence.

Another appreciated but discreet addition: the ability to disable automatic video playback in the eShop, a gain in comfort for those who often browse the online store.

Nintendo continues to improve its two consoles via small ergonomic and technical touches. This version 21.0.0 clearly illustrates the desire to better connect playerswhile making the Switch 2 closer than ever to a fully fluid hybrid console.
