Mattson Tomlin, showrunner of “Terminator Zero,” recently announced on his X account that Netflix has officially canceled the anime series – despite plans that were already well advanced. We summarize below.
Hardly any audience interest
According to Tomlin, both the reviews and feedback from viewers were very positive (MyAnimeList rating: 7.06). However, the hoped-for success did not materialize because the series did not reach enough viewers.
If you take a look at the detailed usage data that Netflix itself makes public as part of its “What We Watched” evaluations, “Terminator Zero” was the 413th most-watched series in the second half of 2024 with 4.8 million views and around 18.2 million streaming hours.
In the first half of 2025 there were only 500,000 views with 1.9 million streaming hours, which resulted in a disappointing 3457th place. This crash was apparently far too drastic for those responsible at Netflix, especially because the title was only released on August 29, 2024.
No blame to Netflix
Now the emergency brake has been pulled – although, according to Tomlin, the script for the second season had already been completed and there were already plans for a third season. A total of five seasons were even planned.
But despite the cancellation, Tomlin did not blame the streaming service – on the contrary, he even described Netflix as a very good partner:
»The marketing team at Netflix really got involved and were very open to my ideas to get the series running in the best possible way. We all did our best and I am very grateful that I was allowed to take the helm.«
What do you think of the cancellation? Have you seen “Terminator Zero” and would you like to see more seasons? Please let us know!
