Horizon Hunters Gathering is playable for free this weekend, don’t miss it

Since the critical and commercial success of Horizon Forbidden West, few imagined the series taking such a marked turn. However, with Horizon Hunters Gathering, Guerrilla Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment seek to redefine the historic formula of the license. And starting this weekend, some players can already get their hands on it for free as part of a strategic closed beta.

An assumed break with the classic solo formula

Unlike the main episodes focused on narrative exploration and solo adventure, Horizon Hunters Gathering adopts an action-oriented cooperative model. The player now joins a team of specialized hunters. Each member has specific skills and a progression system incorporating partially randomized abilities, reinforcing replayability and strategic adaptation. This structural change marks a clear desire: to offer a collective, dynamic experience designed for repeated sessions, far from the traditional linear solo adventure.

A Horizon designed to last over time

The project adopts a structure close to a live service, with regular updates, seasonal events and progressive narrative additions. The story will not be fixed at launch. New threats, new characters and story arcs will evolve over the seasons. Between two missions, players will find themselves in a central hub called Hunters Gathering, a real community space used to prepare expeditions, improve equipment and interact with other participants.

A strategic closed beta on PS5 and PC

The current testing phase remains limited and supervised. It is only accessible on PlayStation 5 and PC. To try to participate, it is necessary to register for free in the PlayStation beta program. Selected players will then receive temporary access to the test. Crossplay between PS5 and PC will be available in the final version, strengthening the multiplayer ecosystem and the longevity of the title.

A decisive bet for the future of the franchise

Beyond the simple technical test, this beta constitutes a strategic moment for Guerrilla Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment. The reception given to this new cooperative orientation will largely determine the multiplayer future of the Horizon license. If there is support, Horizon Hunters Gathering could become a lasting pillar of the PlayStation catalog alongside iconic solo productions. The official release is planned for later in the year, but this weekend will already provide a first indicator of the saga’s ability to evolve without losing its identity.
