GTA 4 is reborn with a free RTX mod, Liberty City has never been so beautiful

While the arrival of GTA VI monopolizes the attention of fans, some have not forgotten the titles that built the legend of Rockstar. This is particularly the case with GTA IV, released in 2008, and still considered one of the most notable parts of the series thanks to its dark atmosphere and its unforgettable protagonist, Niko Bellic.

But with the weight of the years, its graphics begin to show the blow. A gap that the community set out to correct. And the result is striking.

A visual remaster signed by the community thanks to RTX Remix

On YouTube, the Digital Dreams channel revealed a version of GTA IV transformed thanks to the mod RTX Remix Pathtracing Community Remaster. This project, in development by the modder Xoxor4Duses the latest ray tracing rendering technologies to radically transform the visual appearance of the game.

Liberty City, with its neon lights, dynamic lighting and realistic reflections, is gaining a second youth. The textures benefit from a modern treatment, and the light interacts with the environment as in the most recent titles. Even if certain details such as vegetation or water still require improvement, the whole is impressive.

One user noted in the comments: “The PBR materials aren’t defined and the shaders for puddles aren’t programmed correctly. But the fact that ray tracing works is impressive.”

A spectacular mod, but reserved for the most powerful configurations

If the idea of rediscovering GTA IV in such a sophisticated version is attractive, you must keep in mind that this mod is not for all machines. It requires a very muscular configuration to function correctly. Even with high-end graphics cards, maintaining a smooth 60 frames per second without the use of image generation technologies remains a real challenge.

This mod is not yet available for free download. However, people who support the creator Xoxor4D via its Patreon page will be able to access it before its public release.

GTA IV, still standing while waiting for GTA VI

While GTA VI is expected for November 2026, this type of project shows to what extent the old parts of the saga continue to live on through the passion of players. GTA IV, with its unique atmosphere, strong characters and ultra-realistic urban setting, still has a place in the hearts of fans.

This community remaster reminds us that technology can bring classics back to life, while waiting until the highly anticipated return of Vice City in a brand new opus.
