Fortnite: bad news for players, prices of V-Bucks are increasing

Fortnite remains one of the most popular games in the world, notably thanks to its economic model based on free-to-play. The game can be downloaded for free, but much of the cosmetic content relies on the use of a virtual currency: V-Bucks.

These allow you to purchase skins, accessories or even different seasonal passes. But Epic Games has just announced a change that could change the way players spend their money in the game. Starting March 19, 2026, the amount of V-Bucks included in several packs will decrease.

V-Bucks packs will offer less currency

Epic Games has confirmed that several popular packs are going to be changed. Concretely, players will receive fewer V-Bucks for the same price as before. Here are the main changes announced:

  • the pack to 8.99 dollars will go from 1000 to 800 V-Bucks
  • the pack to 22.99 dollars will go from 2800 to 2400 V-Bucks
  • the pack to 36.99 dollars will go from 5000 to 4500 V-Bucks
  • the pack to $89.99 will go from 13,500 to 12,500 V-Bucks

Epic Games has also changed the system for purchasing a specific amount of V-Bucks. The minimum price thus goes from $0.50 for 50 V-Bucks to $0.99 for the same quantity. For many players, this therefore amounts to an indirect increase in the price of virtual currency.

Epic Games discusses rising operating costs

This decision would not be linked solely to a commercial strategy. Epic Games explains that the costs associated with running the game have increased significantly. In an official post, the publisher explains that “Fortnite operating costs have increased significantly”which led the company to adjust the value of V-Bucks packs. Maintaining such a popular game requires significant investments.

Servers, the development of new content, collaborations with famous franchises and even regular updates represent significant expenses. This increase could therefore be a way for Epic Games to balance these costs in the long term.

A reward system to compensate

Although the news may disappoint some players, Epic Games also offers a way to mitigate this increase. Players who purchase their V-Bucks through the Epic payment system or the Epic Games Store will be able to collect 20% of their spending in the form of Epic Rewards. These credits can then be used in several games in the Epic ecosystem, including:

  • Fortnite
  • Rocket League
  • Fall Guys

This system can allow regular players to recoup some of their spending and reuse it for future purchases.

Fortnite Crew remains an interesting option

In addition, the Fortnite Crew subscription continues to offer several advantages. This monthly service provides access to different content, including:

  • the Battle Pass
  • exclusive cosmetic items
  • and a quantity of V-Bucks each month

In some cases, this subscription may become a more profitable option for players who regularly spend money in the game. Especially since Fortnite Crew is now included in certain Xbox Game Pass Ultimate offers, which can represent an interesting saving for subscribers.
