Although Studio KAI has been involved in a number of very successful anime productions, the company is now in over-indebtedness. We summarize the details below.
In the red since it was founded
Since its founding in 2019, Studio KAI has been in the red for seven consecutive years while accumulating liabilities of approximately 2.05 billion yen (10.9 million euros). The previous fiscal year 2025 alone ended with a loss of 565 million yen (3 million euros).
According to the April 13, 2026 edition of the Japanese government official gazette Kanpo, liabilities now exceed existing equity assets, which is why the company is now considered to be over-indebted – even though Studio KAI has produced some popular anime titles in recent years.
For example, “Sentenced to Be a Hero”, “Hell Teacher”, “Fuuto Tantei”, “A Star Brighter Than the Sun”, “Skeleton Knight in Another World”, “7th Time Loop” and the second season of “Uma Musume: Pretty Derby” were created at Studio KAI.
In addition, the animation studio is responsible for the reboots “The Ramparts of Ice”, “Mistress Kanan is Devilishly Easy” and “Snowball Earth”, all of which will be broadcast in the current spring 2026 season.
It is not yet known whether excessive indebtedness will have a negative impact on these stocks. However, a precautionary solution has already been found for “Skeleton Knight in Another World”: the second season is being created in another studio.
