Censorship in Russia: Anime database MyAnimeList is officially blocked

The Russian media regulator Roskomnadzor officially blocked the popular anime and manga platform MyAnimeList in Russia on October 22, 2025. We summarize the details below.

Domain blocked in Russia

With more than 18 million registered users, MyAnimeList is one of the largest databases for anime and manga fans worldwide. However, users from Russia no longer have access to their accounts because the domain “myanimelist.net” has been blocked by all internet providers.

According to Roskomnadzor’s assessment, MyAnimeList »systematically place materials that promote non-traditional sexual relationships or preferences«. Since a Supreme Court ruling in 2023, the LGBTQ movement in Russia has been officially considered “extremist.”

According to the announcement, the ban could be lifted if MyAnimeList removes all content that “classified as illegal in Russia” become. The platform thus joins a growing list of banned websites, which has also included numerous illegal anime streaming platforms since last year.
