After The Last of Us, Craig Mazin tackles Baldur’s Gate
The adaptation will be directed by Craig Mazin, co-creator and showrunner of The Last of Us serieswho will also serve as writer, executive producer and showrunner on the project.
The production is done in partnership with Hasbro Entertainment, which holds the audiovisual rights linked to the Dungeons & Dragons universe.
Besides Mazin, several names will be associated with the production:
- Jacqueline Lesko (executive producer who works regularly with Mazin)
- Cecil O’Connor (same)
- Gabriel Marano (Hasbro Entertainment) as executive producers. Additionally, former Head of Storytelling at Wizards of the Coast, Chris Perkins, will serve as narrative consultant to ensure the authenticity of the original material.
Craig Mazin, presents himself as a fervent fan of Baldur’s Gate 3 and said he invested almost 1000 hours into the gamewhich deeply inspired him for this TV project.
Larian Studios behind
The most surprising thing about this series is that it will not be a strictly faithful adaptation of Baldur’s Gate 3 (or even Bioware games), but a sequel taking place just after the events of the Larian CRPG.
It will thus explore the consequences of players’ choices and the repercussions of major events in the game with familiar characters and new protagonists.
However, doubts can be raised regarding this adaptation. First of all Larian Studios is not directly involved in the production. The other challenge will be to manage the multiple choices and possible endings offered by GOTY 2023.
We obviously feel a certain pleasure in seeing the characters we love again on the small screen, however we cannot help but have concerns, especially since the fans risk being divided depending on the fixed narrative choices that the series will take.
No official date has yet been communicated for the broadcast of the series. The project is clearly in its early stages and we can expect pre-production, casting and filming to take several months before we have a first teaser
