It’s a generous end to the year for PlayStation 5 users. Without notice, Sony has made two completely free games available, available now on the PlayStation Store. The first, Lokkowas released on December 18; the second, Cup HeroesDecember 19. Two very different games, two distinct studios, but one thing in common: no cost to play them.
Even more surprising, one of these titles is a PS5 exclusive. A rare enough event to be highlighted, especially when it is neither an announced free-to-play nor a game linked to PlayStation Plus.
Lokko: a creative and 100% PS5 platform game
Developed by Appy Monkeys Software, Lokko presents itself as a 3D platform game in the vein of the classics of the genre, with a touch of community creation. “Help Lokko and his brother defeat the evil Goobol Corporation and deliver hot pizzas around the world!”, we can read in the game description.
This is not a demo or just temporary access: although the game is still in beta, players can download and keep it. Another particularity, Lokko is only available on PS5, making it a true console exclusive. A surprising choice for a free game, generally designed for wide multiplatform distribution.
On the PlayStation Store, it gets a remarkable rating of 4.21 out of 5, which remains high for a free-to-play game. The level creation system, character customization and the possibility of sharing your creations in real time seem to appeal to the first testers.
Cup Heroes: light strategy and heroic cups
Released a day later, Cup Heroes offers a completely different universe. Developed by Qubic Games, this action-adventure game combines combat, tactics and storytelling. “Enter the whimsical world of Cup Heroes, where ordinary cups are transformed into mighty heroes on an epic quest to save their beloved queen!” says the official description.
With an even higher user rating (4.27/5), Cup Heroes seduces with its simple aesthetic, its absurd humor and its immediate handling. The game is available on multiple platforms, but the PS5 version looks particularly polished.
Some players mention the presence of microtransactions, but emphasize that they are neither mandatory nor intrusive. “They are neither obligatory nor abusive”, according to several comments visible on the store.
A discreet but effective Sony strategy
It is rare for Sony to release two free games in quick succession without official communication. Neither Lokko neither Cup Heroes are not part of the monthly PS Plus games, nor a seasonal event. Their sudden and free availability is intriguing.
On the side of Lokkothe Appy Monkeys Software studio signs its second game here, after Blox 3D World in 2021. As for Cup HeroesQubic Games is already well known for its accessible and colorful games on Switch and mobile. This foray into PS5 shows a desire to expand its audience without sacrificing quality.
Two good reasons to search the PlayStation Store
With such low-key releases, these titles could easily go unnoticed. However, between exclusivity, creativity and originality, these two free games are worth a look. And if one or the other becomes chargeable again later, the first to download them will not have paid anything.
Whether it’s delivering pizzas in 3D or saving a cup queen in a surreal world, the PS5 offers two unexpected experiences this week… and free.
