Hollow Knight: Silksong gets its first epic expansion and resurrects the original opus on Switch 2

Hollow Knight: Silksong – Sea of Sorrow has been officially announced as the first ever expansion to the highly anticipated Metroidvania. With an immersive and aquatic trailer, fans were able to discover new content centered on Hornet, faced with new enemies and mysteries. The information does not come alone: Team Cherry also revealed the development of a remastered version of Hollow Knight first of the name, planned for the Nintendo Switch 2with a free upgrade for existing players.

The Australian team thus demonstrates that it has not slowed down despite years of waiting. Quite the contrary: the studio seems to be riding the intact enthusiasm of players to feed its creativity and reward their loyalty.

A dark and aquatic extension, between poetry and pain

Silksong’s first expansion plunges Hornet into the abyss of a new kingdom called Sea of Sorrow. The first images reveal a world flooded with bluish light, where exploration takes a turn as mysterious as it is perilous. If the release date remains deliberately vague, the promise is clear: new areas, formidable enemies, new abilities, and a complete story arc.

Team Cherry ensures that this extension is just the beginning. “We found that players would like an expansion like Hollow Knight’s Hall of Fame.” Echoing this request, the developers designed Sea of Sorrow as a legitimate extension of the world of Silksong, without blocking access to the game’s main content.

Silksong: development fueled by the pleasure of creation

While Silksong had been delayed for a long time, the team now justifies this time by a real pleasure in developing this new universe. “The development process for Silksong is so much fun that the developers couldn’t stop.”

They describe an organic approach, inspired by the construction of Mario levels. “If you’re trying to create a Mario level, you can take an empty space and say, ‘Hey, should we put some platforms here?’” It’s this detailed, iterative, artisanal work that shapes the very DNA of Silksong and, now, its expansions.

The return of the original Hollow Knight… on Nintendo Switch 2

It’s a big surprise: the very first Hollow Knight will benefit from a version optimized for the Nintendo Switch 2. This portage will offer enhanced graphics, smoother framerate, better resolution and improved visual effectswhile remaining faithful to the original experience.

Better yet, owners of the game on the first Switch will benefit from this upgrade for freea gesture unanimously welcomed by the community. “As Silksong continues to develop, we haven’t forgotten its predecessor, and we’re excited to announce today that we’re hard at work on an updated version of Hollow Knight for Nintendo Switch 2.”

Towards a free future for the Hollow Knight license

Silksong is therefore not an end, but a new starting point. Team Cherry is planning a series of future titles in the Hollow Knight universe, without imposing narrative or chronological order. “We hope that if new Hollow Knight games are released after Silksong, they will be able to co-exist seamlessly, as the order in which they are played doesn’t matter.”

This is a rare philosophy in the video game industry, which confirms the studio’s desire to prioritize the player experience above all else. Hollow Knight is more alive than ever, and the coming months promise to be rich for demanding Metroidvania fans.
