Fallout 3 could well resurface on current consoles. A long-rumored remaster seems to be in preparation again, according to several corroborating sources. And this time, it was Todd Howard himself who revived hopes in an interview given to the magazine GQ.
The director of Bethesda Game Studios confirmed that the team was not only working on the projects already announced: “we are working on other things”. A brief sentence but heavy with innuendo, which immediately set fire to the fans of the post-apocalyptic license.
Fallout 3, soon the same treatment as Oblivion?
According to Video Games Chronicleone of the projects under development at Bethesda would precisely be a remastering of Fallout 3. Information that the site says it has from sources close to the studio, without providing more details for the moment. The rumor is not new: it has been circulating for several years, and was reinforced at the start of 2025 when a well-known leaker on the scene, NateTheHate, affirmed that “the project is indeed real, even if we will have to wait before seeing it”.
The clues are piling up. The name Fallout 3 Remaster already appeared in internal Microsoft documents made public during the procedure with the FTC. It appeared alongside The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, which has indeed seen the light of day. A coincidence that is difficult to ignore, especially since the two games share the same original engine.
For many players, see Oblivion benefiting from a remastered treatment logically reinforces the probability that Fallout 3 follow the same path. The approach would be consistent with Bethesda’s desire to capitalize on its classics while modernizing its licenses for new generations of consoles, starting with the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
A possible release in 2026 on current consoles?
If Bethesda remains silent for the moment, the signals are converging towards an officialization in the coming months. The studio’s release schedule leaves a possible margin after the wave Starfield And Elder Scrolls VI. A release at the end of 2026 seems realistic if the project has actually been underway for a while.
Fallout 3 was originally released in October 2008 for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. Set in the devastated ruins of Washington DC, the game marked a turning point in the series, introducing a first-person view and a dense, mature open world. With its five expansions and its Game of the Year edition, it still remains one of the most beloved episodes of the franchise today.
A remaster, if not a remake, would allow a new generation to discover this classic in modern technical conditions. And for early fans, it would be an opportunity to dive back into the Wastelands of the Capital, without being subject to the technical limitations of the time.
