The globally popular fantasy series “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” (Japanese: “Sousou no Frieren”) has entered into a special collaboration with one of the most famous paintings in art history. We summarize.
Freezing meets Vermeer
A special collaboration illustration was presented a few days ago as part of the upcoming art exhibition “Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring: Dutch Masterpieces of the 17th Century,” which will be held at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art in Osaka from August 21 to September 27, 2026.
This shows the elf magician Frieren as the protagonist of the famous painting The Girl with a Pearl Earring by the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer.
In addition to the illustration, which you can see at the bottom of this article as usual, some exclusive merchandise products have also been announced, although no further details have been provided yet.
Creators are pleased
The two manga creators Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe have also already commented on the collaboration and were pleased to be able to present their own work in connection with one of the most famous works of art in the world.
Abe also explained that creating the illustration was a very valuable experience and that the intensive study of Vermeer’s works further inspired him.
The 28-episode first season of “Freezing: Beyond Journey’s End” is already available on DVD and Blu-ray, while the ten-episode second season was simulcast on Crunchyroll in the winter 2026 season. A third season starts in October 2027.
