HBO has just revealed the final trailer for season 3 of House of the Dragonand one thing jumps out at you: everything converges towards the Battle of the Gosier. For almost two minutes, the trailer continues roaring dragons, burning ships and war cries, announcing the most massive confrontation in the series. The showrunner Ryan Condal Entertainment Weekly even promises “probably the craziest episode of television ever made.”
This season 3 picks up at the moment when the Dance of Dragons turns into open war between the blacks of Rhaenyra Targaryen and the Greens led by Aemond Targaryen. Long criticized for its lack of big battles compared to Game of Thronesthe series seems determined to correct the situation. The trailer shows Rhaenyra ready to take back King’s Landing, Alicent Hightower warning that her son is no longer safe, and promises of betrayal that could bring her down. It remains to be seen what each plan hides.
House of the Dragon season 3: what does the final Battle of the Gosier trailer really show?
The trailer opens on a sea already in flames, where the fleet of Corlys Velaryon confronts that of Triarchy led by Sharako Lohar. Dragons swoop down on ships at wave level, galleys explode, while Rhaenyra’s voice hardens. At the same time, King’s Landing appears under tension, mobilized guards and panicked crowds. Condal explains that it took almost four years to stage this clash combining naval battle, aerial assaults and court plots.
Battle of the Gosier: why does Ryan Condal compare it to Helm’s Deep?
In the novel Fire and Bloodthe Battle of the Gosier is a strategic maritime bottleneck which controls access to the capital. It pits the naval forces of the Blacks, led by the Velaryons, against the Triarchy allied with the Greens, with the dragons as reinforcements. For Condal, telling Dance of the Dragons without this passage would be “like filming The Lord of the Rings without the Battle of Helm’s Deep”. He insists on the need to show “dragons, ships and several theaters of conflict”, from the sky to the sea. Some French media are already presenting it as the biggest battle ever seen on television.
House of the Dragon season 3: when to see this “total war” on HBO Max in France?
For the actors, this opening at Le Gosier marks a clear shift. Emma D’Arcy announces to Première that season 3 is “starting at 100 miles per hour” and that we are finally seeing “the war that has been prepared for two seasons”. Ewan Mitchellwho plays Aemond, speaks in Numerama of “total war” and a “blitz from kick-off”. Enough to give hope for a battle at the level of the cult episodes of Game of Thrones like Nera or the Battle of the Bastards, but with an added dimension: dragons against entire fleets. In the United States, season 3 will launch on June 21, 2026 on HBO. In France, the eight episodes will arrive on HBO Max from June 22, one per week until the end of August 10. House of the Dragon must then conclude with a season 4 planned around 2028.
