The Japanese actor Mackenyu, who plays the role of Zorro in the live-action adaptation of “One Piece”, spoke in an interview with TV Movie about his wishes for the future of the series – and these go surprisingly far.
Long way for the Straw Hats
He explained that he dreams of one day doing the Wano Kuni arc, one of the largest and most popular arcs in Eiichiro Oda’s manga. However, he is aware of how unrealistic this goal seems.
After all, the story arc only starts with chapter 909 of the manga or episode 892 of the anime – while the second season of the Netflix series ends with chapter 154 (episode 91) and has therefore only adapted a fraction so far.
With a wink, Mackenyu noted that he would probably be around 80 years old by then – and would have to help out with CGI if necessary.
Cast is optimistic
Given the sheer enormous scope of the original template with over 1,100 chapters and the current production speed of the live-action adaptation, the question inevitably arises as to whether a complete implementation is even possible.
In addition, the long production cycles of modern series make this project increasingly difficult, which is why it is doubtful whether the Netflix version, the third season of which will appear in 2027, will ever come close to later arcs.
Despite these circumstances, the actors do not let their enthusiasm be taken away from them and when asked about this, in addition to Mackenyu, Emily Rudd (Nami) and Jacob Gibson (Usopp) also expressed their wishes to see upcoming story arcs such as the Water 7 and Enies Lobby arc in the live-action film. In any case, these are two sections whose implementation seems much more realistic.
It remains to be seen whether the Straw Hats’ journey in the live-action version will actually one day lead to Wano-Kuni. However, one thing is clear: there is still a very long way between ambitious dreams and reality.
