Trouble for Crunchyroll: Lawsuit filed after alleged data leak

After a data leak allegedly occurred at Crunchyroll, a lawsuit is now causing additional trouble for the streaming provider. We summarize.

User files lawsuit

For those responsible at Crunchyroll, March was undoubtedly a month to forget. First the company was confronted with legal allegations in connection with user data, then there were reports of a serious cyber attack – and now another lawsuit has been added.

Court documents show that a person from Washington state has filed a lawsuit in the Northern District of California. In it, she accuses the anime provider of not adequately protecting its users’ personal and financial data.

According to the lawsuit, cybercriminals are said to have gained unauthorized access to the data in question by March 12, 2026 at the latest. The possible origin of the attack is an external service provider called Telus, through which the perpetrators are said to have gained access to internal systems.

The plaintiff accuses Crunchyroll of failing to take appropriate security precautions and notifying affected users, including herself, of the incident early on.

It is also argued that this conduct could constitute an unfair commercial practice under the Federal Trade Commission Act. According to the lawsuit, the data leak puts affected users at increased risk of fraud and identity theft, which can also cause stress.

The plaintiff is demanding, among other things, damages and further legal measures. The amount of possible compensation is currently still open.

Official confirmation of the data leak from Crunchyroll is still pending. On March 25, 2026, the company issued a short statement when asked that the incident was currently being investigated. However, users now have the option of checking whether their data has been affected via the “Have I Been Pwned” platform.
