While many modern RPGs rely on gigantic open worlds, some players remain attached to the more intimate and stylized experiences of the 90s. It is precisely in this vein that fits Whispers Between Worlds, an independent RPG developed by the studio gibbletiggle.
The game clearly claims its inspirations, notably Final Fantasy and The Legend of Zelda, with a refined pixel art style and a narrative-focused approach. Currently available only on Steam, the title does not yet have a definitive release date, but a playable demo is available for free.
A story between the world of the living and the kingdom of spirits
The adventure follows Yuri (or Yui depending on the translation), a character born with the ability to see spirits. Banished to the Spirit Realm for reasons that are still mysterious, he will have to confront his past and understand the events that led to his exile.
The developers describe their creation as a “narrative puzzle RPG”, tackling themes such as hope, responsibility and repentance. The spiritual world is presented as an interconnected universe, populated by strange entities and personal stories to discover.
A classic combat system… with a modern twist
On the gameplay side, Whispers Between Worlds adopts a turn-based combat system. However, it includes rapid action sequences which energize the clashes. Attacks are based on alchemy, a central mechanic allowing you to adapt your fighting style. Skills can be strengthened through “Blessings”, bonuses that appear to modify or improve certain abilities.
- Dozens of spirits to meet
- A sketchbook to record your discoveries
- Environmental puzzles
- Traps to defuse
An intriguing mention in the official description even evokes cross-dressing, suggesting a sometimes lighter and offbeat tone.
A short but promising demo
The demo available on Steam would offer between one and two hours of content. Enough to get a first impression of the atmosphere, rhythm and artistic direction. Currently, there is not yet a massive consensus around the game, making it a discovery to be made without outside influence. If Whispers Between Worlds manages to realize its potential, it could become one of the indie surprises to watch in the coming months. In the meantime, it costs nothing to try it.
