PS5: this hidden function helps avoid spoilers in games

Spoilers are now part of players’ daily lives. As soon as a new game is released, social media and sharing platforms quickly fill up with screenshots and videos showing key moments in the story.

For those who prefer to discover a plot without knowing anything in advance, this situation can quickly become frustrating. Fortunately, PlayStation 5 consoles have a little-known setting that allows you to limit certain spoilers directly on the console.

A PS5 option designed to avoid spoilers

Sony has integrated a feature called “spoiler warnings” into the PlayStation 5 settings. This option allows you to hide certain content that may reveal important elements of a game’s story. When this function is activated, the console can automatically hide certain screenshots or gameplay clips sent by other players.

In most cases, these are images shared by friends via console messaging. If this content contains important moments of the storyline, they can be hidden to avoid any unintentional revelation. This feature can be particularly useful when releasing highly anticipated games where the story is a significant part of the experience.

Where to find spoiler warnings in PS5 settings

To activate this option, you must go to the console settings. Once in the main menu, simply open the settings then access the “Saved data and game/application settings” section. On this page, an option called “Spoiler Warnings” is available in the menu on the left of the screen. If the feature is disabled, simply enable it to start filtering certain gaming-related content. This manipulation only takes a few seconds and can help avoid unwanted revelations when discovering a new title.

Two levels of spoiler protection

The PlayStation 5 offers two different levels of filtering. The first mode allows you to hide only spoilers identified by the developers. In this case, only content marked as sensitive by the development studios will be hidden.

The second mode is more strict. It allows you to hide all content from a game that the player has not yet played. This means that even an innocuous screenshot can be hidden if it’s from a title the user hasn’t launched yet. This option provides broader protection for players who want to experience a game without any prior information.

A useful feature for big PlayStation releases

With the proliferation of videos and captures shared online, avoiding spoilers is becoming more and more complicated. This function integrated into the PlayStation 5 helps limit certain risks, particularly during the release of highly anticipated games. An often mentioned example concerns Ghost of Yōtei. If a friend sends a screenshot from this game and the player hasn’t launched it yet, the image may be automatically hidden.

The feature could also be useful for future PlayStation exclusives. Highly anticipated titles like Marvel’s Wolverine are expected to attract a lot of online discussion upon release. In this context, enabling spoiler warnings can help players preserve the element of surprise and discover the game’s story in the best possible conditions.
