Nintendo offers free download for GOTY 2024 game on Switch 2

This is a rather rare surprise from Nintendo. While upgrades to the Switch 2 often come with a fee, an acclaimed game voted Game of the Year 2024 is currently getting a free upgrade for players who already own the previous version. The update is available now and concerns Balatro, the deck-building roguelike developed by independent studio LocalThunk. A title which marked the year 2024 and which continues to appeal to an ever-widening audience.

A GOTY 2024 that has become essential

Released in 2024, Balatro has quickly established itself as one of the best independent games of recent years. Billed as “Balatro is a poker-inspired roguelike deck-building game focused on creating powerful synergies and achieving big wins,” the title offers a particularly addictive strategic mix.

To celebrate its arrival on Switch 2Balatro is currently enjoying a 20% discount. Its price therefore drops from £12.79 to £10.23 during the promotional period. An interesting opportunity for those who do not yet own the game. Balatro is also available on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and mobile devices.

A strategic positioning for Nintendo

This decision is all the more surprising since Nintendo generally adopts a strict pricing policy regarding generational upgrades. The exception made for Balatro could reflect a desire to encourage the adoption of the Switch 2, while promoting an independent title having marked 2024.

With its gameplay particularly suited to nomadic sessions, Balatro seems to naturally find its place on a portable console like the Switch 2. For players who already own it, the transition to the new version therefore takes place at no additional cost.
