Thunderclap, PlayStation closes a major PS5 studio, 70 jobs threatened

The news took much of the PlayStation community by surprise. Bluepoint Games, a Texas studio renowned for its ambitious remakes and technical mastery, has officially closed its doors. The information, first reported by Bloomberg via journalist Jason Schreier, was later confirmed by PlayStation. This closure comes after an internal review of the group’s activities. Around 70 people would lose their jobs according to initial information.

Bluepoint Games, a pillar of PlayStation remakes

Founded in 2006 in Austin, Texas, Bluepoint Games had built a solid reputation in the field of high-end remasters and remakes. The studio is notably behind the new versions of Shadow of the Colossus and Demon’s Souls, the latter having served as a launch title for the PlayStation 5 in 2020. Sony officially acquired Bluepoint in 2021, shortly after the release of Demon’s Souls. The operation seemed to confirm PlayStation’s desire to permanently integrate the studio into its first-party ecosystem. Over the years, Bluepoint has stood out for its technical expertise and its ability to modernize classics without betraying their essence.

The official confirmation from PlayStation

In a statement provided to Bloomberg, a PlayStation spokesperson praised the work accomplished by the team. “Bluepoint Games is an incredibly talented team and their technical expertise has helped deliver exceptional experiences to the PlayStation community” “We thank them for their passion, creativity and know-how” The company specifies that the decision follows a recent strategic review of its activities. No additional details were released regarding the specific reasons for the closure.

A God of War project canceled before closure

After joining the PlayStation Studios family, Bluepoint participated in the co-development of God of War Ragnarök in 2022. The studio was also working on a live service project based on the God of War franchise. This project would have been canceled in 2025, according to several information published last year. Following this cancellation, Bluepoint was apparently collaborating with Sony on a new strategic direction. However, it is unclear what exactly the project was in progress at the time of the studio’s closure.

A delicate context for PlayStation Studios

The closure of Bluepoint is part of a broader context of restructuring in the video game industry. Several publishers and studios have made workforce reductions or internal reorganizations in recent months. For PlayStation, the disappearance of such a popular studio raises questions about the group’s long-term strategy, particularly with regard to live service projects and remakes. At this time, Bluepoint Games has not released an official independent statement. The future of the employees concerned remains uncertain.
