A postponement which would undoubtedly be well received
At least that’s what Bloomberg puts forward in an article taking stock of the current state of the RAM market. Many companies today find themselves in a very complicated situation, from Nvidia to Samsung, including Sony. Launching a PS6 at the end of 2027 seems unrealistic in today’s world, even if it would fit the usual cycle of console generations. According to Bloomberg, Sony is well aware of the situation, and would consider releasing its next console a little later, in 2028, or even 2029 :
“ According to sources close to Sony, the group is considering pushing back the release of its next PlayStation console to 2028, or even 2029. Such a postponement would disrupt a carefully developed strategy to maintain user engagement between console generations. »
After all, launching a new machine in the current climate would be extremely dangerous, both for the shortage it could cause and for the price positioning which would necessarily be far too high. Add to this the fact that Sony has not even updated its PS5 Pro yet (despite a major update promised for a while), suggesting that the manufacturer does not need to turn the page on the PS5 too quickly.
The price of the Switch 2 could increase in 2026
In this same article, Bloomberg also discusses the consequences that this RAM crisis could cause at Nintendo. The manufacturer has already stated on several occasions that it has sufficient stocks to avoid a shortage, but the question of a price increase is never far away. Bloomberg indicates that Nintendo is closely studying the market to decide whether to increase the price of its Switch 2 or not, which could happen this year :
“ Nintendo, its main competitor [en parlant de Sony]which contributed to strong demand in 2025 thanks to the success of its new Switch 2 console and increased sales of storage cards, is also considering increasing the price of the latter in 2026, according to sources familiar with the matter. »
For its part, Nintendo has repeatedly clarified that an increase in the price of the Switch 2 has not yet been decided, and that no conclusions have been drawn to date. But the market has shown us in recent years that it is better to expect the worst here.
