PS6: credible leak suggests custom AMD architecture and 30 GB of memory

As the PS5 continues to welcome its biggest exclusives, the first serious rumors around the PlayStation 6 are starting to emerge. According to several technical discussions relayed on the NeoGAF forum, Sony’s next console would not entirely adopt AMD’s RDNA 5 graphics architecture.

The information comes from KeplerL2, a technical tipster known for his revelations related to GPU architectures. According to him, the PS6 would not be “entirely based on RDNA 5”, like the current PS5, whose architecture combines RDNA 1 elements and advanced ray tracing technologies.

A hybrid architecture for the PS6?

The idea of a hybrid architecture is not new at Sony. The PS5, although announced as based on RDNA 2, actually incorporates custom components and specific optimizations. According to KeplerL2, the PS6 would follow the same logic. It would not be based exclusively on RDNA 5, the future generation of GPUs from AMD, but would integrate a personalized approach adapted to Sony’s needs.

This choice could allow Sony to optimize graphics performance while controlling production costs. Modern consoles no longer simply integrate standard components: they use tailor-made architectures to balance power, energy efficiency and compatibility.

Up to 30 GB of GDDR7 memory?

Another piece of information mentioned concerns RAM. The PS6 could have up to 30 GB of GDDR7 memory. A significant development compared to the 16 GB of GDDR6 present in the PS5. At the same time, a new generation portable console would also be in preparation. This could have up to 24 GB of LPDDR5X memory. It would be compatible with a docking station and capable of running PS5 games. However, this portable console would not be as powerful as the current PS5. It would rather aim for a compromise between mobility and compatibility, like hybrid consoles.

An expected release after 2027

Despite this technical information, we should not expect to see the PS6 arrive before 2027 at the earliest. AMD recently said it was preparing to support the launch of the next generation of Xbox consoles in 2027. However, Microsoft said it was not officially committing to a date. If Sony follows a similar schedule, the PS6 could arrive around the same time. This would still leave several years for the PS5 to fully exploit its life cycle.

For now, this information should be viewed with caution. They are based on discussions from specialized forums and not on official announcements from Sony. Nevertheless, they provide a first glimpse of possible technical directions for the next generation of PlayStation consoles.
