It’s a surprise that no one saw coming. To close out the franchise’s 20th anniversary celebrations God of War, Santa Monica Studio launched this February 12 God of War: Sons of Spartaa brand new game to discover now on PlayStation 5. The announcement was accompanied by another major revelation: complete remakes of the original trilogy are also in preparation.
Developed in collaboration with Mega Cat Studios, Sons of Sparta moves away from the brutal realism of the last parts to offer a retro adventure in 2D pixel artinspired by the childhood of Kratos has Spartansalongside his brother Deimos.
A new God of War in 2D pixel art
According to the PlayStation Blog“God of War: Sons of Sparta is a 2D action platform game whose canonical story takes place in Kratos’ youth, during his rigorous training at the Agoge alongside his brother Deimos. » “From the Santa Monica Studio writing team that brought you God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök, Sons of Sparta is a story of duty, honor, and brotherhood starring TC Carson who reprises his role for the first time in over a decade as the adult version of Kratos, the narrator of our story! »
Reworked gameplay for a new genre
The title offers a combat system inspired by previous opuses but adapted to lateral 2D gameplay. “God of War’s dynamic combat system finds its place in a whole new genre. Kratos will learn deadly techniques using his spear and shield, and master powerful divine artifacts known as the Gifts of Olympus to face a wide range of enemies. »
Add to this a new bestiary and a worked artistic direction. “Sons of Sparta marks the return of iconic classics recreated in 2D with stunning hand-drawn pixel animation, as well as a host of new creatures for the franchise, inspired by the rich and untapped facets of Greek mythology, brought to life by the retro experts at Mega Cat Studios. »

Remakes of the original trilogy confirmed
Other shocking information: the first three God of War will benefit from a full remake. The announcement was made by the team and by T. C. Carsonbut caution is required: “This project is only in its infancy, so we ask for your patience, as we will still have to wait before we can share further information. When we can give you some news, we intend to give you an important one” Until then, Sons of Sparta will allow fans to wait while rediscovering a Kratos younger, rawer, in a completely reinvented style.
