PS5: Sony is rolling out a major update, what’s new?

Sony Interactive Entertainment has just released the version 26.01-12.70.00 of PS5 system software. Announced on February 12, 2026, this new update is available now for all users connected to the Internet. As is often the case in recent months, it does not include a revised interface or new visible features.

The patch notes are succinct, with Sony simply indicating that it has “improved system software performance and stability”. In other words, it is a minor technical fixintended to ensure smooth operation of the console over the long term.

A discreet but useful update

Although this type of update may seem uninteresting at first glance, it plays a key role in the progressive optimization of the PS5. These invisible tweaks often fix isolated crashes, reduce specific loading times, or improve compatibility with certain devices.

Nothing has been communicated by Sony regarding possible problems corrected in this version, but the frequency of these micro-updates – one every two months on average – indicates a desire to maintain the stability of the system at a high level. For regular players or fans of rest mode, this can limit persistent bugs.

92 million PS5s: an installed base to maintain

The PS5 has reached a symbolic milestone: 92.2 million copies sold worldwide since its launch in November 2020. This figure, revealed during Sony’s last financial conference, testifies to the massive success of the console despite a start marked by shortages linked to the pandemic.

With such a broad base, each update, even minor, must respond to a very wide range of configurations (resolutions, external hard drives, VR headset, etc.). This explains the priority given to stability, even if it means abandoning spectacular new developments.

What players can expect from upcoming releases

If this version 12.70.00 focuses on reliability, several features requested by the community are still awaiting their integration: reorganized the trophy menu, improved voice chator even adding custom wallpapers.

Sony no longer communicates in advance about future developments, preferring grouped announcements during State of Play. But the stability boosted with each update could set the stage for major additions in the months to come.
