Microsoft confirms the lifespan of Xbox Series X|S, and it’s very good news

The next generation of consoles is on the horizon, but gamers with an Xbox Series X|S have no reason to panic. At a time when even the smallest component is becoming scarce and prices are soaring, Microsoft has discreetly confirmed that its current console will still last. A revelation that comes at just the right time to reassure the millions of players who are not considering changing devices immediately.

This is via a report signed Jez Corden, sector expert for Windows Centralthat this information emerged. According to him, Microsoft does not plan to release its next Xbox before 2027, thus pushing the traditional limits of the console life cycle. This strategy is part of a context of strong economic pressure on consumers and rapid evolution of the hardware ecosystem.

Microsoft expects a much longer lifespan than expected

Since its launch in November 2020, the Xbox Series X|S is entering its sixth year. While the market expected to see a new console appear around 2025 or 2026, Microsoft is playing the longevity card. “Microsoft anticipates that the ninth-generation Xbox Series

Concretely, this means that even after the release of a potential next generation Xbox, games will continue to be developed for Series X|S, software updates maintained, and compatibility ensured with future major titles.

A fundamental trend throughout the industry

This is not an isolated case. Sony also continued to support the PS4 well after the release of the PS5, and this logic now seems to apply to all major players in the sector. “Developers from all walks of life, including Microsoft, are creating games compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2, Steam Deck, and other lower-end devices. This trend is expected to continue for quite a while, even after the launch of the next-gen Xbox,” Corden adds.

Players’ demand for broader compatibility and a longer lifespan pushes publishers to adapt their productions. This flexibility benefits those who prefer to delay purchasing a new console, or even do without it altogether.

A decision influenced by prices and the shortage of chips

In addition to strategic choices, the economic context plays a key role. The Game Pass saw its price increase, the consoles too, and even the Switch followed suit. Added to this is a global shortage of electronic chips, aggravated by the high demand for artificial intelligence. Some estimates suggest a launch price of $1,000 for the future Xbox.

Under these conditions, many consumers are hesitant to invest. Microsoft seems to be fully aware of this and takes care to reassure its community. The Xbox Series X|S, originally sold for $499 (or $299 for the S version), therefore remains a safe bet for years to come.
