PlayStation 3: Netflix definitively draws a line under the console in 2026

The PlayStation 3, released in 2006, has long been a pillar of multimedia entertainment in homes. Not content with being a powerful gaming console for its time, it also proved to be a platform of choice for watching films and series. In 2009, Netflix launched a native application there, paving the way for living room streaming well before the advent of connected televisions.

As early as 2012, the PS3 even became the leading platform for using Netflix, briefly surpassing the PC. For many, it has therefore been a key tool in the democratization of streaming in living rooms.

Netflix ends the application on PlayStation 3 from March 2026

Users were informed via a simple message when opening the application: “Unfortunately, Netflix will no longer be available on this device after March 2, 2026.” No official explanation has been provided, but there may be several reasons for this decision. On the one hand, maintaining technical support for a console that is almost twenty years old represents a logistical cost. On the other hand, Netflix could seek to homogenize its ecosystem in the face of flaws still possible via old devices.

the PS3 still allowed some users to bypass modern restrictions such as the limitation of account sharing or geolocation functions imposed on other more recent media.

A cult console that was resisting

While the PlayStation 3 has been largely supplanted by its descendants (PS4, PS5), it retained a small, loyal audience for its media player function. Some users continued to use it exclusively to access Netflix, taking advantage of its simple interface, without advertising or blocking shared accounts. This Netflix support, discreet but robust, allowed households without a Smart TV or a modern box to continue watching their favorite programs.

PS3 and Netflix: a collaboration that marked a generation

The end of Netflix support on PS3 is highly symbolic. This isn’t just a technical update, but the end of an iconic partnership between a visionary console and a then-growing streaming service.

For those nostalgic for this console, it is an opportunity to salute a bygone era when video games and streaming coexisted in the same box. From March 2, 2026, you will have to turn to more recent solutions to continue enjoying Netflix in your living room.
