A narrative spin-off in the crazy universe of Borderlands
Released in 2022, New Tales from the Borderlands is a multiple-choice narrative game, inspired by the previous one Tales from the Borderlands developed by Telltale Games. Unlike the main episodes of the saga, here, there is no frenzied shooting or loot galore: we follow a scripted adventure through the eyes of three characters.
The title was born from the internal studios of Gearbox Software. The story takes place on the planet Promethea, and the player plays Anu, Octavio and Fran, three anti-heroes embarked on a fight against an intergalactic multinational. The humor specific to Borderlands is still present, but the whole thing has divided the community.
A very divided critical reception
Despite expectations, the game received a lukewarm reception to say the least. Metacritic scores range from 57 to 69depending on the platforms, and players often point out the sluggish pace and lackluster dialogue.
However, some remain curious. As ComicBook notes: “If you were intrigued by the game but never wanted to shell out $40, this is the perfect opportunity to see for yourself if it’s as disappointing as the reviews make it out to be.”
