Steam is offering a cult 2024 game for free, but you have to act quickly

Developed by the independent studio NipoBox, Kiki is a 3D platform and puzzle game, composed of three chapters and 30 levels. Colorful and retro in its vibe, the title features an energetic chiptune soundtrack and reflex-driven gameplay. The official synopsis touts “a dynamic platform game with unique graphics and a catchy chiptune soundtrack,” with challenges “that only your agility and quick reflexes can overcome.”

Mixed reviews on Steam

Despite this promise, Kiki suffers from a fairly cold reception from the players. Critics point in particular to problems with handling, latency between controls and action, and a difficulty considered unfair.

As one user explains: “While it presents itself as a platformer requiring precision, the controls and mechanics often lack consistency, which is a major problem for a game that relies so much on timing and precision. »

Others complain about a repetitive soundtrack and a general lack of polish. This does not prevent some curious people from testing the experience, precisely thanks to its free game status.

A controversy surrounding the use of AI

One of the sources of criticism also lies in the fact that NipoBox would have massively used artificial intelligence to generate content in its previous games. Although no mention is made of this in Kikithe studio’s reputation remains tainted. This controversy divides the community: some refuse to support a studio using AI excessively, while others consider that free play is enough to give the game a chance.

Should you download Kiki? Or look elsewhere?

If you like challenging platform games and have a little patience, Kiki can entertain you for an hour or two. On the other hand, if you are looking for a successful game that is really pleasant to play, it might be better to pass.

Fortunately, Steam is full of other much higher-rated free titles. Classics like Warframe, Dota 2 Or Team Fortress 2 remain safe values, even years after their launch. The important thing is not to miss the date: you have until January 31, 2026 to claim your free copy of Kiki.
