For several months, speculation around the release date of the future PlayStation 6 fuel conversations among players and analysts. While an arrival in 2027 had been mentioned by certain industrial sources, a new revelation has cast doubt on this hypothesis. According to the insider Detective Seedswell known in the industry for its precise leaks, Sony’s next generation console would ultimately not see the light of day before 2029.
An insider relaunches the subject with internal information
It was via a post on the X network that Detective Seeds relaunched the debate, by reaffirming information that he had already shared a year earlier. According to him, “the release date of the PS6, initially planned for 2029, seems to be confirmed”, specifying that his information comes directly “from a PlayStation engineer”.
He adds: “I know that 2027 had been mentioned, but last summer, it was confirmed to me that 2029 was the planned release year, with the portable version being planned before. » This statement is in line with recurring rumors about a PlayStation portable console in preparation, which could arrive well before the PS6.
A strategic delay more than a simple postponement?
This new date of 2029 aligns with previous reports for the year 2025, notably that of Tom Henderson for Insider Gaming. At the time, he claimed that major console makers, including Sony, were considering delay the next generation due to several economic factors.
Among the reasons given, we find the surge in the price of components, in particular the RAM memorywhich impacts the production cost of consoles, but also their selling price. In a market where the PS5 has not yet fully saturated its potential, it could be strategic for Sony to extend the life cycle of the current machine.
2029, a realistic date for the PS6?
Historically, PlayStation consoles follow a life cycle of 7 to 8 years old. The PS4 was released in 2013, the PS5 in 2020. If we respect this logic, a PS6 in 2027 would have seemed coherent. But given current economic realities, a two-year delay would not be surprising.
And with a console potentially more powerful, more connected, and focused on cloud gaming, Sony seems to want to take the time to master its technology, while maximizing the revenue generated by the PS5 and its probable Pro version. If this information is confirmed, players will have to wait a while longer before discovering what Sony is really preparing for its next big machine.
