It’s difficult to sort through the mass of free games on Steam. Yet, Everyday Devila small independent production with a modest appearance, made everyone agree. Rated 10/10 by users at the time of its release, this narrative game with a bittersweet aesthetic mixes psychological influences and introspective stories.
Developed by independent creators alleesaur and klausthecloset, Everyday Devil presents itself as “a short and linear narrative game telling the life of an average demon”. A strange, but captivating, starting point. In the shoes of a disillusioned little demon, you dive into his fragmented memories and his existential reflections, through minimalist but striking sequences.
One hour to feel a lifetime
Between two fragments of memory, the game constantly evolves. Sometimes a simple contemplative stroll, sometimes painful introspection, Everyday Devil surprises with its changing gameplay. One thing is certain, here, you will walk… and talk. A lot.
The tone is set from the first lines: “Ah, what can a devil do these days?” the protagonist asks. “When I look back on the past, I’m not sure I learned anything. Was there really anything to learn, exactly?” The inner voice of this atypical character is both cynical and sincere, almost poetic.
In his direct narration to the player, he concludes: “May you be my judge, my jury, and my executioner, dear player, as you venture into my thoughts and my life. Through my mistakes and my trials. Welcome to my daily life.”
The contrast between the melancholic background and the sometimes playful form is deliberate. The developers describe their creation as follows: “It’s a strange world, full of darkness. But for him, it’s just his everyday life.”
Between Silent Hill, Undertale… and an adorable cat
Behind its air of strange fable, Everyday Devil touched by his sincerity. Some players even speak of an almost therapeutic experience. “Extremely cute, a true creation made with love. It made me think about what love once meant to me: a choice, the choice of uninterrupted boredom that somehow has something sweet about it,” one user wrote on Steam.
Another sums up the spirit of the game perfectly: “As promised, it’s both warm and a little depressing, with cute illustrations, fun interactions, and a very realistic depiction of apartment hunting. AND THIS CAT IS ADORABLE! 10/10.”
Graphically, the game hits the mark. Subtle mix of 2D and 3D, warm colors, cozy atmosphere… “What a charming experience! The graphics are a real treat for the eyes, I love the mix of 2D elements in a 3D world. The atmosphere is incredible and the warm, natural tones are the icing on the cake! The story is also excellent.”
Without pretension but with the heart, Everyday Devil managed to score in one hour where others failed in ten. A touching break, free, and just a click away on Steam.
